Anyway vs. Anyways

Anyway vs. Anyways

These two words-anyway and anyways-serve as an example of what is considered correct for formal language and what might be okay in spoken language. We often use more casual speech and tone in spoken language than we do in formal written language. Let's look at these two words and how they are both used, one more formally and one more colloquially.

Anyway is an adverb that is used in a couple of different ways. It can mean in spite or despite something.

1. Even though I have homework, I think I will go swimming anyway.

2. While her mom told her no sweets, Marissa at the cupcake anyway.

3. Even though it's Friday, Mr. Harris gave us homework anyway.

Anyway can also be used as a way to refocus attention to something else, or to change the course of a conversation. Anyway is a transition word.

1. Yes, the football team lost, but anyway, the homecoming dance is this weekend.

2. Anyway, as I was saying before you interrupted, it's going to rain today.

3. Anyway, at the end of the day, we did everything we said we would do to help Mrs. Jeffers.

Anyway can also be used to show a desire to end a subject or conversation.

1. That's all I know anyway.

2. It's time for us to go anyway.

The word anyways means the same thing as anyway ; however, it is not accepted as part of formal language. Anyways is a more informal colloquialism that we use in everyday speech. So, anyway, I hope you now understand how these two words are used!
