Disc vs. Disk

Disc vs. Disk

Sometimes synonyms-such as disc and disk-are used interchangeably, but in certain instances one is preferred over the other. While both words would be considered correct, it is common enough to choose one over the other that you should do so when possible. Let's take a closer look at disc and disk and you will see what I mean.

Disc and disk are nouns that are used to refer to round, flat items. These words can also function as adjectives in some instances. While typically interchangeable, disc is typically preferred when referring to albums, and other devices on which music is played. Some also note that this spelling is typically used for medical situations. Disk is typically referred when referring to computer storage devices.

1. The athlete dislocated a disc in his back, and he was required to have surgery.

2. The disk drive on my computer is broken, and it won't allow me to add a disk.

3. My father has a huge collection of compact discs that are from many different artists and genres of music.

4. We watched as the flying disk raced through the air and into the mouth of the golden retriever.

While there are preferred spellings in some situations, these words are used so interchangeably that you will likely not receive censure for using either one in any situation. However, a true music devotee or a tech genius may take issue with you if you don't use the preferred spelling.
