Prose

Prose is everyday language and writing. It is different from poetry because it does not have a rhythm or meter.

Examples of Prose:

Narrative Prose:

Mr. Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited on Mr. Bingley. He had always intended to visit him, though to the last always assuring his wife that he should not go; and till the evening after the visit was paid she had no knowledge of it. It was then disclosed in the following manner. Observing his second daughter employed in trimming a hat, he suddenly addressed her with:

"I hope Mr. Bingley will like it, Lizzy."

Nonfiction Prose--Speech:

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Nonfiction Prose-Explication:

To make the cookies, first, you add butter and shortening to the bowl. Mix them together. Then, you add three eggs and three cups of flour. You will also need to add a teaspoon of vanilla. Mix all ingredients until a dough forms.
