Cocoa Beach is located in Florida's Brevard County, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Following the American Civil War the first settlers were a family of freed slaves. Before becoming a town, Cocoa Beach was known as Oceanus. In 1925 it was incorporated as the Town of Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach encompasses 15.14 square miles, 10.48 of which is water. The population of the town is roughly 11,761. Cocoa Beach borders Cape Canaveral, Crescent Beach, the Atlantic Ocean, and Banana River. Many of the homes that exist in Coca Beach were built on land (mud and sand) that was dredged from Banana River.

Cocoa Beach got its name after the city Cocoa, which is believed to have got its name because mail was delivered by river boat and used to be placed in a tin box labeled Baker's Cocoa.

Cocoa Beach is considered to be the surfing capital of the east coast.
The largest population of the nesting Loggerhead Sea Turtle lives in Cocoa Beach.
