Marilyn Monroe was a famous model, singer and actress from the 1950s and 1960s. She was born June 1st, 1926, in Los Angeles, California to Gladys Pearl Baker and Martin Edward Mortensen. Her name at birth was Norma Jeane Mortensen but her mother had it changed to Baker soon after Norma's birth. Gladys was unable to care for Norma so she grew up in foster homes and with relatives for most of her young life, even spending a year in an orphanage in Los Angeles. She married at 16, and worked in a munitions factory while her husband served in the military. She began modeling and her career took off from there. She became one of the most memorable icons of her era, before her death on August 5th, 1962 at the age of 36.

Norma Jeane Baker changed her name to Marilyn Monroe in March of 1956, in an effort to create a screen name for her movie career.
Nobody is certain who Marilyn's father really was. It could have been Martin Mortensen or Stanley Gifford.
Marilyn bleached her dark hair to blonde because she heard that they were looking for models with lighter hair.
Marilyn signed with Blue Book Modeling Agency and became one of their most successful models.
Marilyn filed for divorce from her first husband Jim Dougherty in September 1946. She also signed an acting contract around the same time with 20th Century Fox.
In 1948 Marilyn Monroe signed a contract with Columbia Pictures. She filmed a low budget musical Ladies of the Chorus. It flopped and she was dropped by Columbia Pictures.
In 1949 she had a small role in the movie Love Happy by the Marx Brothers. She did a few more roles in movies.
Her career began to take off in 1950 following a role in the movie The Asphalt Jungle.
Marilyn Monroe signed a 7 year contract with 20th Century Fox in 1950, and she had a minor nose job to remove a bump of cartilage.
Marilyn Monroe enrolled in the University of California in 1951 and studied art and literature.
In 1951 Marilyn Monroe was a presenter at the 23rd Academy Awards (Oscars).
In 1953 a picture of Marilyn Monroe appeared in Playboy Magazine's first issue and caused a scandal. She had agreed to the photos years before when she was broke.
Marilyn Monroe began dating Joe DiMaggio, a famous baseball player in 1952. Her career started to take off at the same time. Marilyn and Joe married in 1954. Their marriage lasted less than a year.
Marilyn studied acting at the Actor's Studio and continued to pursue her acting career. Her next movie was Bus Stop.
She married playwright Arthur Miller in 1956. They split in 1961.
In 1959 she made the movie Some Like It Hot, playing Sugar Kane Kowalczyk. She won ‘Best Actress in a Comedy' at the Golden Globes in 1959 for this role.
Her last completed movie was The Misfits, in 1961. She played opposite Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift.
She was fired from her next movie before it was completed because she didn't show up for many filming days.
Marilyn died on August 5th, 1962 at the age of 36. Her death was ruled a ‘possible suicide' but many believe she was murdered.
