Egyptian Mau is very old breed of domestic cat. As its name suggests, it originates from Egypt, where it has been created 3.000 years ago from African wild cat. Egyptian Mau has been introduced to Europe before the WWII and to the USA in 1956. Despite its beauty and nice temper, Egyptian Mau is very rare breed today. It is mostly kept as a house pet and as a show cat.

Egyptian Mau can reach 2 feet in length and 6 to 14 pounds of weight.
Egyptian Mau has soft, silky fur that can be silver, bronze, smoke (light silver fur with black hair tips) or bluish-colored. This is the only type of domestic cat that is naturally spotted (covered with dark, round or oblong spots). Egyptian Mau has M-shaped dark markings on the forehead, two black lines on the cheek and dark bands on the tail.
Egyptian Mau has rounded to wedge-shaped head with large green eyes and large ears. It has muscular, but slender body with long hind legs and small paws.
Egyptian Mau is the fastest of all domestic cats. It can reach the speed of 30 miles per hour thanks to its long hind legs and skin fold under the belly.
Word "Mau" is an Egyptian word for "cat". Egyptian Maus have played important role in the mythology, art and religion in the ancient Egypt.
Egyptian Mau is very intelligent cat that can learn to open drawer and to solve simple puzzle.
Egyptian Mau is affectionate pet. Even though it likes to spend time with all family members, it usually builds very strong bond with only one person.
Egyptian Mau likes to cuddle, but not all the time. It clearly "informs" its owners when it feels a need for cuddling.
Egyptian Mau is suitable for families with children and other cats and cat-friendly dogs. It is not good choice for families with birds due to strong hunting instinct.
Egyptian Mau likes to play games where it can display its hunting skills (to chase and retrieve toys and "hunt" lures attached to the fishing pole). It likes to climb and jump from the countertops and tall bookcases and to play with water from the kitchen sink, water dish and aquarium.
Egyptian Mau emits quiet, pleasant, melodious sound, kneads with its front paws and twitches its tail when it is happy.
Egyptian Mau has short to medium-long fur that requires weekly brushing.
Egyptian Mau has longer gestation period (72 days) compared to other domestic cats (62 to 67 days). It gives birth to 6 kittens on average.
Egyptian Mau is generally healthy breed, but it is sensitive to medicines and anesthesia.
Egyptian Mau has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
