Manx Facts

Manx Facts
Manx is an old breed of domestic cat. It originates from the Isle of Man (an island between the Great Britain and Ireland). Manx was initially shorthair. Vikings brought longhair Norwegian Forest Cats to the island and they soon started to mate with Manx, leading to the creation of Manx with much longer coat (longhair variety of Manx is known as Cymric). Despite its excellent hunting skills that were highly prized in the past, Manx is mostly kept as a house pet and show cat today.
Interesting Manx Facts:
Manx can reach 8 to 12 pounds of weight.
Purebred Manx cats are available in all colors and patterns except chocolate, lavender and Himalayan pointed pattern.
Manx has wide round face, big eyes, large ears with rounded tips, stout, round body, short front legs and very long hind legs. Manx can be completely tailless, or born with small, partially developed tail.
Depending on the size of a tail, Manx is known as rumpy (complete lack of tail), rumpy riser (born with stub), stumpy (born with partial tail) and longy (born with near-complete tail).
Unusual morphology of the body and lack of tail are responsible for the legend that Manx is produced by mixing a cat with a rabbit.
According to another unusual story, Manx has lost its tail when Noah shut the door on its Ark when it started to rain.
Name "Manx" refers to the place of its origin - Isle of Man. According to a popular belief, Manx had survived shipwreck of Spanish Armada, managed to reach the coast and decided to stay there.
Manx is friendly, affectionate, intelligent and playful cat. It is suitable for the families with children and other pets (cats and cat-friendly dogs).
Manx has dog-like personality. It likes to play fetch, run with toys in the mouth, play with other dogs and follow its owners through the house. It also acts like a "watchdog" which instantly reacts and growls to anything that looks or sounds suspicious and unusual.
Manx can be seen on some coins and stamps printed on the Isle of Man.
Manx is featured in the cartoon Ren and Stimpy (Ren is Chihuahua, while Stimpy is Manx).
Manx sheds a lot, but its grooming doesn't require too much time and effort. It should be brushed at least once per week.
Manx gives birth to 2 to 4 kittens on average. Kittens with tail of various length can be often seen in the same litter (no matter the size of a tail of their parents).
Manx is generally healthy breed, but it can suffer from arthritis of a tailbone, ocular disorders and Manx syndrome (set of birth defects that can be seen in around 20% of Manx cats).
Manx has an average lifespan of 8 to 14 years.
