Beagle is a type of scenthound. This is an ancient dog breed, created 2500 years ago. Modern beagle originates from England. It was created during the 19th century to facilitate hunting of hares, rabbits, foxes, fish and game birds. Beagle is still very popular and often used as hunting dog, but thanks to its friendly personality, medium size and nice overall appearance, it also represents one of the most popular pets in the world. Beagle is the 5th most popular dog in America.

Beagle can reach 13 to 16 inches in height and 20 to 25 pounds of weight.
Beagle has smooth coat that is usually white, black and light brown-colored. Some varieties of Beagle are black, white, tan, red, yellowish or bluish colored. All purebred Beagles have white fur in their tail (white tip or at least few white hairs close to the tip).
Beagle has dome-shaped skull, square muzzle, long, floppy ears, small to medium-sized, muscular body and long, slightly curled tail.
First type of Beagle, Pocket Beagle, was very small, only 8 to 9 inches high. Due to selective breeding, whose goal was to create large hunting dog, Pocket Beagle no longer exists.
Beagle is intelligent, curious and friendly dog that loves adventures. Due to its stubborn nature and independent mind, Beagle cannot be trained easily.
Beagle is suitable for families with children and other cats and dogs, but not with chinchillas, mice and hamsters. Beagle is pack dog that prefers company of other dogs (it hates to be left on its own). It can be kept in the apartments and houses with backyards. Beagle requires at least one walk per day to remain healthy and fit.
Beagle is not very good as guard dog because it easily builds friendly bonds with strangers.
Beagle has acute sense of smell thanks to 220 million scent receptors in the nose (44 times more than humans). Beagles are official dogs of the US government that are used to prevent smuggling of illegal agricultural products into America.
Name "Beagle" is derived from the French words "bee gueule", which mean "wide throat". Name refers to the vocal nature of Beagle and its habit to bark and howl when it feels lonely or when it detects some interesting scent.
Queen Elizabeth I and King James I were great fans of Beagle.
Popular cartoon character "Snoopy" is Beagle.
Beagle is an average shedder (grooming doesn't require too much effort). Its ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent potential infections.
Beagle can give birth from 2 to 14 puppies (7 on average).
Beagle is generally healthy breed, but it can suffer from epilepsy, hypothyroidism and dwarfism.
Beagle has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
