Nintendo Wii is a gaming console that was first released by Nintendo in 2006. The Nintendo Wii's main competitors were the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360. In December 2009 it broke the U.S. record for console sales in one month. By the first quarter of 2012 the Nintendo Wii had sold more than 101 million units around the world. Wii also introduced a pointing device that enables it to detect three dimensional movement, called the Wii Remote controller. Nintendo first mentioned the Wii console in 2004 but it was not released until 2006. It had been first conceived when the Nintendo Game Cube was being released, in 2001.
