Medical Terminology is a special vocabulary or language used by health care professionals for accurate and effective communication. Medical terms can be divided into parts such as the root, prefix and suffix. If you know the definition of the parts it will help you to better be able to understand the meaning of the whole word. For example, if you know that ology means the study of then you know that pharmacology, nephrology and cardiology are all the study of something. Pharm has to do with drugs, nephr/o with the kidney and cardi/o the heart. Therefore; pharmacology is the study of drugs, nephrology the study of the kidneys and cardiology is the study of the heart. Stedman's Medical Dictionary is a great resource for Medical Terminology.
