Amino acids are simple molecules that contain an amine group and an acid group. There are more than one hundred known amino acids, but only twenty are found in living organisms. Amino acids contain an acid and a base. Amino acids have a central carbon atom to which is bonded a carboxyl group, an amino group, a hydrogen atom and a variable side chain. Amino acids bond to each other via a peptide bond and the entire structure is called a dipeptide. A polypeptide is a chain of ten or more amino acids. A chain of 50+ amino acids is called a protein.
