Ukraine was once a part of Kyivan Rus, which was a large and powerful state in Europe. It eventually became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the mid-17th century, a new Ukrainian state was established, the Cossack Hetmanate, which stayed independent for over a century. Most of the Ukrainian territory became part of the Russian Empire during the late 18th century.
