Europe : Kosovo Geography Quiz
Modern Kosovo was part of the Roman and Byzantine Empires before the 7th century. In medieval times, Kosovo was the center of a Serbian Empire. Five centuries of Ottoman rule followed the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. After that, many Turks and Albanians migrated to the area, and the Albanians became the dominant group. Serbia got control during the First Balkan War in 1912, and Kosovo became part of Yugoslavia. Albanian nationalism increased in the 1980s and led to Kosovo declaring independence in 1991. This led to civil war and brutal repression by Serbia. A NATO operation finally resolved the conflict in 1999, but Serbia still rejected Kosovo's independence until an International Court of Justice ruled for Kosovo in 2010.
