Earth Science : Seismic Waves Quiz

Quiz
*Theme/Title: Seismic Waves
* Description/Instructions
Seismic waves are earthquake generated and recorded on a seismograph. They reveal that the Earth is multi-layered, composed of the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. When an earthquake occurs, energy is released in all directions from the interior to the surface. The seismic waves produced in such an event travels faster through the liquid outer core and mantle than it does through the solid surface.

There are two kinds of seismic waves: body waves, which travel through the Earth’s surface, and surface waves, which travel on Earth’s surface. Body waves are further classified as primary or P-waves, which are longitudinal waves that move fast. S-waves, or secondary waves, are transverse waves that move slowly.

This quiz covers seismic waves. Use the above information to assist in answering the questions. Read the description and identify the best answer from the choices.
