A Christmas Carol Stave 4 Summary

The third phantom appeared, and Scrooge asked if it was the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come to which the Spirit pointed down. After several more questions, Scrooge realized this ghost wouldn't speak, which made his knees quake even more. The Ghost led him to a group of men, and Scrooge listened to their conversation about someone who had recently died. They were joking about attending the funeral, since no one else would, only if lunch were provided. Then Scrooge listened in on two more businessmen, whom he knew, who had a similar conversation about someone who had recently died. Scrooge didn't know why the Spirit would have him listen to these trivial conversations as he couldn't imagine about whom they were speaking.

They left these conversations and appeared in a pawn shop in a seedy part of town. Three people entered the shop at the same time all carrying bundles of items. Each one knew why the other two were there. The owner opened the first man's bundle to find some small items, including a pencil case and brooch, which the owner wrote up a price for. Then he looked at the first woman's pile of silver, utensils, and boots. The third woman brought in bed curtains, sheets, and a dress shirt, which she said that she took off the dead man himself. They all laughed at how this man deserved to be robbed in such a way as he never shared anything while he lived. Scrooge didn't like the way these people were behaving and felt sorry for the deceased.

Suddenly, Scrooge found himself in a dark room with an object under a sheet upon the bed. The Phantom pointed, but Scrooge could not bring himself to move the sheet. He begged the Ghost to let him leave. Then Scrooge asked the Spirit to show him anyone who felt emotion over the person's death. They appeared in the house of a couple who was concerned about a debt they owed. Her husband reported that the man whom they owed had died, so they wondered to whom the debt would pass. Whoever it was could not be more merciless than the dead man, so they relaxed a bit and seemed happy. This reaction was not what Scrooge had been expecting, so he asked the Spirit if he could see someone express more tenderness toward the dead man.

He appeared at Bob Cratchit's house once more where the family was clearly struggling. Bob came home late and tired, upset about poor Tiny Tim. Scrooge still wished to see his future self. The Spirit took him to his office, but Scrooge's furnishings were no longer there. Then the Ghost pointed to a churchyard. They walked toward a tombstone, and Scrooge wanted to know if the things he saw would definitely happen or could still be altered, but the Ghost refused to speak. Scrooge went toward the grave and saw his own name. He realized he was the dead man beneath the sheet. He promised the Ghost he would change his ways as the Phantom collapsed and instead Scrooge saw a bedpost.
