1839 Baseball is invented

Abner Doubleday created the game of baseball in his own backyard. He lived in New York.
1845 The rules of the game are made

Alexander Cartwright made the rules of baseball, including three strikes and you're out!
1846 The first official game is played

The first official game was played between a team called the Knickerbockers and a team of cricket players.
1866 A women's baseball team is started

A women's ball team was formed by students at Vassar College.
1867 The first curve ball is thrown

The first recorded curve ball was thrown by Candy Cummings.
1869 The Boston Red Stockings is formed

Another pro team was formed, this time in Boston. They were called the Boston Red Stockings.
1876 The first baseball league is formed

The National League was formed by William Hubert.
1882 The American Baseball Association is started

Another league was begun in 1882. It was called the American Baseball Association, or the Beer and Whiskey League.
1884 The first African-American in baseball

Moses Fleetwood Walker became the first African-American to play professional baseball.
1903 The World Series is created

The first World Series was played between the Pittsburg Pirates and the Boston Pilgrims.
1904 A woman plays pro ball

A woman named Alta Weiss was the first woman to play pro baseball.
1912 The first baseball strike goes into effect

Players went on their first strike. It wouldn't be the last.
1929 Babe Ruth makes baseball history

Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run, making baseball history.
1936 The Baseball Hall of Fame is opened

The Baseball Hall of Fame opened in this year. They inducted five players into their first Hall of Fame.
1943 The first All-American girls' team is formed

During WWII, when many of the players were fighting overseas, the All-American Girls' Team was formed.
1947 The World Series on the big screen

1947 was the first year that the World Series was played on television. The baseball fever caught on, and baseball is still one of the most popular sports in America today!
