Independent Clauses

An independent clause is a complete sentence. Remember that a sentence has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. So, an independent clause is a set of words that has a subject, a verb, and expresses a complete thought. The word "independent" means that it can stand alone!

Examples of Independent Clauses:

1. Jeffrey went to the store.

2. Please, wait. (understood subject is "you")

3. Let's go.

4. Martha and Jan were late for the movie.

5. Can you help me with this homework?
