Ragdoll Facts
Ragdoll is relatively new breed of cat created in California in 1963. Known as one of the largest (domestic) cats in the world, Ragdoll was created by mixing longhair Persian/Angora cat with Birman and Burmese-like cats. Thanks to its beautiful physique and nice temper, it instantly became popular among cat lovers all over the world (it is especially popular in the USA and UK). Aside as a house pet, Ragdoll is also very popular as a show cat.
Interesting Ragdoll Facts:
Ragdoll can reach 15 (females) to 20 (males) pounds of weight.
Ragdoll has semi-long, soft, silky coat that can be lilac, red, blue, chocolate, seal or cream-colored. Most Ragdolls have lighter-colored fur on the body and darker-colored fur on the face, ears, legs and tail. Varieties of Ragdoll with bi-colored fur have facial mask in the form of inverted letter "V". Mitted type of Ragdoll have completely white fur on the paws (creating an impression of mittens).
Ragdoll does not have undercoat (its coat is made of long guard hairs) which makes this breed suitable for people that are allergic to cat's hair.
Ragdoll has oval blue eyes (they can be also blue-green or gold-colored), large, rounded ears, strong, muscular body and long, bushy tail.
Ragdoll is very intelligent and inquisitive by nature. It can be easily trained by using positive reinforcement methods.
Ragdoll is pleasant, laid-back and docile cat. It is affectionate and suitable for families with children and other cats and cat-friendly dogs. Ragdoll likes to play with various toys and to cuddle.
Name "Ragdoll" refers to the unusual habit of this breed to completely relax muscles in the body and become limp when it is lifted from the floor (like a ragdoll). Despite its large weight, Ragdoll likes to be carried around.
Ragdoll is also known as "puppy cat" because it follows its owners throughout the house and always stays close to them. It can also learn to play fetch and walk on the leash.
Unlike other cats, Ragdoll does not make mess in the house, because it spends most of the time close to people (it rarely investigates its surroundings).
Ragdoll is very curious about water. It reacts momentarily to the sound of the running water in the kitchen and bathroom and comes instantly to closely examine it.
Ragdoll is suitable for the life in the apartments.
Despite its long fur, Ragdoll sheds very little. It should be brushed two times per week.
Ragdoll gives birth to 5 kittens on the average (up to 7). All kittens are born with white fur and blue eyes. Color of the fur and eyes start to change few weeks after birth.
Ragdoll can suffer from urinary tract and cardiac disorders.
Ragdoll has an average lifespan of around 10 years.
