Poodle is type of domestic dog that belongs to the group of formal dog breeds. It originates from Germany. Poodle was created during the 15th or 16th century for hunting of waterfowl. It soon became popular as companion dog all over the Europe, especially among the nobility and royal families. Poodle is still very popular as house pet because of its elegant appearance, relatively small size (toy and mini varieties) and charming personality. It can be easily recognized thanks to the numerous fashionable haircuts that are typical for this breed.

There are three different types of poodle: toy, miniature and standard. Poodle can reach 11 to 22 inches in height and 6 to 60 pounds of weight.
Poodle has fluffy coat that can be black, blue, light or dark brown, creamy, grey, reddish, silver, beige or white.
Poodle has moderately rounded skull with elongated muzzle, oval eyes and long, flat ears. Its tail is straight and held high.
Poodle is the second smartest dog (right after Border Collie) on the planet. It can be easily trained. Poodle can quickly learn to perform various tricks, which is why it was very popular in the circuses in the past.
Poodle is proficient swimmer with excellent water-retrieving skills. It was often used for hunting of ducks in the past. Thanks to its athletic nature and great agility, it can accomplish excellent results on the competitions in agility, tracking and herding.
Poodle is affectionate animal that is suitable for families with children and other pets. It loudly announces guests, but never shows aggression toward them.
Poodle is often used as therapy dog for elderly and handicapped persons.
Poodle-like dogs were very popular in the Ancient Greece and Rome. They can be even seen on the old coins dating back from that period.
Poodle is national dog of France.
Elvis Presley was great fan of poodles. He owned a poodle named Champagne and believed that poodles are the perfect gift for women (he gave many poodles to the women he loved).
Poodle is odorless breed. Its fur grows constantly and sheds minimally, which makes this breed perfect choice for all people that are allergic to dog's hair. Grooming requires lots of time and patience, but it needs to be performed regularly to prevent tangling of fur.
Because of its hypoallergenic nature, Poodle is often used for creation of different types of designer (hybrid) dogs. So far, Poodle has been successfully interbred with Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel and Wheaten Terrier.
Poodle gives birth to 3 (toy), 5 (mini) or 7 (standard) puppies.
Poodle is generally healthy breed, but it can suffer from Addison's disease, cataract and cardiac disorders.
Poodle has an average lifespan of 12 to 16 years.
