Batman is a fictional cartoon character that was created in Bob Kane and Bill Finger, first appearing in DC Comics' Detective Comics #27 in May, 1939. Batman was originally named 'the Bat-Man'. Batman, like most superheroes, has a secret identity. His is Bruce Wayne - an American philanthropist, billionaire, and lady's man, who owns Wayne Enterprises and lives in Gotham City. He witnessed his parents being murdered when he was only a child, and as a result he swore to get revenge on the criminals while taking an oath of maintaining a sense of justice. He trains to become Batman, mentally and physically, and with the help of his butler Alfred, his sidekick Robin, and the police commissioner Jim Gordon, pursues criminals and brings many to justice.

Batman is also known as the 'Caped Crusader', the 'World's Greatest Detective', and the 'Dark Knight'.
While most superheroes have superpowers, Batman does not. He relies on his martial arts skills, detective skills, physical strength, intellect, wealth, technology, and will to face the criminals in Gotham City.
First introduced in 1939, Batman developed a fan base that spawned his own comic book in 1940, titled Batman.
Over the next several decades Batman's following grew and his character spawned a TV show titled Batman in the 1960s.
Although the TV show was popular, it deviated from the dark roots of Batman's character. The TV show was campy and often comical, while Batman's true character was dark. The TV show starred Adam West as Batman, and Burt Ward as Robin.
In 1986 Frank Miller wrote a four-issue comic book miniseries. It resulted in The Dark Knight Returns, a story of Batman at 55 coming out of retirement to fight crime.
In 2001 Frank Miller wrote a three part series titled The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
Further instalments in the Frank Miller Batman series are to include The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, and Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade.
Batman has been a popular character for the big screen. In 1989 Warner Bros. released the feature film Batman, starring Michael Keaton, followed by Batman Returns in 1992, once again with Michael Keaton in the starring role.
In 1995 Val Kilmer played Batman in Batman Forever.
In 1997 George Clooney played Batman in Batman & Robin.
The next planned film Batman Triumphant was cancelled due to poor reception of Batman & Robin. It was time to take Batman back to his darker roots.
Batman Begins was released in 2005 starring Christian Bale. He played the role again in The Dark Knight in 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. These movies portrayed Batman's original darker character, moving away from the campy Batman in the Schumacher versions in the 1990s.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release in 2016, starring Ben Affleck.
Batman is second on IGNs Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time (2011). Superman beat him for first place.
Batman has gone by several alias' including Matches Malone, Sir Hemingford Grey, Mordecai Wayne, The Insider, Minuteman, and Lefty Knox.
Batman's love interests have included Catwoman, Vicki Vale, Batwoman and Julie Madison.
Batman's secret headquarters is the Batcave.
When the police require Batman's help they send out the Bat-Signal.
Commissioner Gordon's daughter was Batgirl.
The villains that Batman has famously faced include the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, the Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Clayface, and Mr. Freeze, among others.
