SpongeBob SquarePants is a very successful and popular animated cartoon series in the United States. It was created by Nickelodeon animator Stephen Hillenburg in 1989 as a comic book (unpublished) titled The Intertidal Zone, but it wasn't developed into a TV series until 1996. SpongeBob's name was going to be SpongeBoy but the name had already been trademarked. The series premiered in 1999. It became so popular that a movie was released in 2004 titled The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. SpongeBob is a yellow sea sponge that looks like a kitchen sponge. He lives in a sea pineapple and works at a restaurant called the Krusty Krab where he makes Krabby Patty burgers. He has several cast mates that range from a simple-minded starfish to a miserable octopus.

When Stephen Hillenburg pitched his new series to executives at Nickelodeon in 1997 he wore a Hawaiian shirt and brought along character models. It was a successful pitch and the rest was history.
