American Born Chinese Part II Summary

The next section returns to Jin Weng who has moved on to seventh grade. He had begun to notice girls, in particular Amelia Harris. At first his friend Wei-Chen made fun of him, but when Jin said he was acting F.O.B. (fresh off the boat), Wei-Chen began dating Suzy Nakamura. When Amelia volunteered to stay after school to take care of the class pets, Wei-Chen tried to encourage Jin to volunteer too, but his noises drew the teacher's attention and Wei-Chen was forced to volunteer. When Jin asked Wei-Chen and Suzy if they thought Amelia liked Greg, they told him no and that he should talk to her.

The next day Jin showed up to school with hair like Greg's. That day after school Wei-Chen went to look for the pet food in the closet. When Amelia followed him inside to help, the door closed behind her, and they were locked in together. While waiting for someone to rescue them, Amelia asks Wei-Chen if Jin likes her, and Wei-Chen says she will have to ask Jin herself. When Jin finally convinced the janitor to unlock the door, Wei-Chen whispered to Jin that this was his chance, so Jin asked Amelia if she'd want to hang out with him, and she said yes.

The following section returns to Danny who is bringing Chin-kee to school with him, but he's clearly embarrassed and tells him to stay quiet. Instead Chin-kee went through all of Danny's classes answering the teachers' questions in his broken English. Then at lunch Danny talks to Steve, a star on their basketball team. He's joking around with Danny, who has made the team too. While they're talking, Chin-kee grabs Steve's Coke and pees in it before Steve drinks some and figures it out. After school Danny has to go to detention for being late when he runs into Melanie, his tutor. He asks her to see a movie, but she tells him she only wants to be friends. Danny thinks it's because of Chin-kee and assures Melanie that he's not like his cousin, but Melanie says that's not the reason although she does point out that Danny's teeth buck out a little and offers him a card for her uncle who is an orthodontist. Danny goes to basketball practice after detention and talks to Steve about how he's had to transfer schools three times because his cousin comes to stay with him each year and embarrasses him so much. Steve promises that won't happen at this school then offers to buy Danny a Coke. Danny assumes he's being racist and asks if he's offering so that Danny can pee it in at which point Steve figures out what happened to his Coke from earlier and throws up.

The next section features four monks who achieved legendary status. One monk, Won Lai-Tsao did not seem to have any remarkable abilities. Each day he would feed the poor, tend to the sick, and then repeat the process the next day. When asked why he continually did these kind things, he responded that Tze-Yo-Tzuh loves and provides for him, so he tries to do the same for others. Emissaries of Tze-Yo-Tzuh heard his answer and told Won Lai-Tsao that he had been chosen for a mission. First, he was sent to find the monkey king beneath the pile of rock. When Won Lai-Tsao found the monkey king, he was treated poorly. The monkey king was stubborn and did not want to return to his true form in order to be freed from the mountain. Finally, he gave in and saved Won Lai-Tsao from the demons. He agreed to journey with Won Lai-Tsao, but the monkey was told he would no longer need his shoes, so he left them behind.
