Following the dismal effects of World War One many across the globe and especially in Europe thought they were seeing the decline of their formerly superior society. This was the case for some who contributed to culture and art of the period, specifically theologians, psychologists, poets, and other intellectuals. Other saw this period as an opportunity for new frontiers, providing a dynamic backdrop to the onset of World War Two.
