AP World History : New Conflagrations: World War II and the Cold War Quiz

Quiz
*Theme/Title: New Conflagrations: World War II and the Cold War
* Description/Instructions
In the second half of the twentieth century, the world was gripped by two epic struggles for power that left millions dead in their wakes - World War II and the Cold War. World War II arose primarily as political struggle where the fascist countries of Germany, Italy and their Axis allies challenged the democratic-capitalist countries of the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and their communist ally, the Soviet Union, for control of the world. After the Allied powers defeated the Axis powers, a new world order was established where old friends became foes.

During the Cold War - which lasted from the end of World War II until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 - the United States led a coalition of democratic-capitalist countries against the communist Soviet Union and its allies. Although the United States and the Soviet Union never engaged each other directly in combat, there were a number of "proxy wars" that both sides supported against the other, some of which included the following: the Korean War in the early 1950s; the Vietnam War in the 1960s and '70s; the Afghanistan War in the 1980s, and various conflicts in Central America during the 1980s. Take the quiz on this chapter to test your knowledge of these two important wars in world history.
