The Descriptive Statistics questions on the GMAT exam all focus around some common concepts: mean (average), median, mode, range, standard deviation, and frequency distributions. Each is defined below.
  • Mean – the sum of the values divided by the number of values

  • Median - is the middle number of the set of data. It is found by numbering the values from least to greatest and finding the number that is positioned in the middle. In case of an even set of number the mean of the two middle position numbers is determined.

  • Mode – The value that occurs most frequently in the set

  • Range – The greatest value in the set minus the lowest value of the set

  • Standard Deviation – Measures the spread of data.

  • Frequency Distribution – a means of displaying data sets
