A Raisin in the Sun Important Characters
Walter Lee Younger - Mama's son, Ruth's husband, and Travis's father. He is a chauffeur who wants to become rich by opening a liquor store with his friends.
Beneatha Younger (Bennie) - Mama's daughter and Walter's younger sister. Beneatha is attending college to become a doctor. She dates several men but seems to prefer Joseph Asagai.
Lena Younger (Mama) - A religious woman who still lives with her grown children. Since her husband recently died, she is receiving money for his life insurance.
Ruth Younger - Walter's wife and Travis's mother. Ruth tries to keep the peace in a very crowded household. She becomes pregnant and struggles with how she feels about this new baby.
Travis Younger - 10 year old son who has to share everything in his life.
Joseph Asagai - Originally from Nigeria, he dates Beneatha and encourages her to move back to Africa with him and practice medicine there.
George Murchison - A rich man who dates Beneatha but believes women don't need to work.
Karl Lindner - The only white character in the play, Mr. Lindner comes from the Clybourne Park Improvement Association, which is the neighborhood where the Youngers are buying a house.
Bobo - One of Walter's partners in the liquor store plan.
Willy Harris - Walter's friend who upsets the liquor store plan (never actually appears in the play).
Mrs. Johnson - The Youngers' neighbor who worries about them moving to a white neighborhood.
